Searching for information

There is a huge amount of information out there in Cyberspace. How do you find what you are looking for ?

Fortunately all information on the Internet is stored electronically. Computers can search electronic information at breathtaking speed. So if you want to find out about something - ask a search engine!

Not all search engines are equal so you may need to know a little about how they work.

Here is a list of my favourite search engines on the internet with a few personal opinions as to their usefulness. Give them a try - you might get lucky!

  1. Alta vista
This searches the whole of the internet for the word you give ie it is a free text search. This can give surprising results sometimes!
The main site is in the USA but Telstra have an Australian mirror site which is much faster.
  2. If you only want to search sites which are in Australia and New Zealand - try the Web Wombat!
  3. If you are looking for a business then try Yahoo
  4. Some search engines try to guess the question you are asking and match that rather than just the words you type in. Excite is one of those.
  5. If we want to find MEDICAL INFORMATION then try the search engine at the Polytechnic Institute for Development and Enterprise.
