Statistics for Pt 1 FANZCA

This is supplemental information for my presentation / tutorial on statistics for the Queensland branch of the Australia and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists. The full tutorial is available online on the University of Queensland Gasbone web server: http://gasbone.herston.uq.edu.au/teach/stats/home.html

If the gasbone site is not available then the presentation material is also available for download from here as a windows help file or in Adobe PDF format.

If you wish to experiment with some easy to use statistics software designed for medical users, complete with an excellent help system then try StatsDirect which can be obtained online at http://www.camcode.com

I mentioned a 1993 article originally published in 'The Lancet' by Lucy Carpenter titled 'Is the Study Worth Doing?' This is an excellent article talking about some of the background to sample size calculation and study design. I have uploaded a scanned image of my old battered copy but you may wish to consult the original at your local library.

During the second part of the talk if time allows we will look at some example papers published in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care. If you are an ASA member then your subscription to this journal (and the archival CDROM) is included in your membership. It is an excellent source of articles to evaluate and upon which to practice your statistical skills.
